Dietary Considerations: Sarah Mason

For my research assignment, I looked in to dietary considerations for people with Type 2 Diabetes. As always, whether you have diabetes or not, it is always important to keep these suggestions in mind. Creating a meal plan can help maintain a steady blood sugar level because it ensure that your body is getting enough food to perform properly. Meal plans are also important because they allow individuals to s tot keep track of how much sugar the body is intaking. A good meal plan involves vegetables, whole grains, fruits, non-fat dairy, beans, lean meat and poultry/fish. Spacing meals out about four to six hours apart gives the body enough time to break down the sugar. Lastly, as a part of the meal plan, it is okay to splurge every once in a while, but only do so in moderation. Drinking enough water is also important to keep your blood sugar levels in check. Other beverages such as juice, milk and soda are high in sugar and should be avoided when possible.

Half of the plate should be loaded with vegetables, such as leafy greens. One quarter should be filled with lean meat or fish for protein and the other quarter should be whole grain or a food item with starch. On the side it is suggested to eat one serving of fruit and one cup of dairy. These suggestions are according to the My Plate.

In addition to a healthy diet, exercise is an important consideration for people with Type 2 Diabetes. Exercise is important because it burns calories and avoids weight gain. Lastly, it is important to take your blood glucose levels regularly to ensure that you are staying healthy.
