Two years ago, I (JP) was teaching a Wilderness First Responder Class in Seattle. After discussing type 2 diabetes with the class one of the students and I had a fantastic conversation about the high rates of type 2 diabetes in the Islands. As she spoke, my wheels began to turn: Why is diabetes such a problem for the islands? What factors contribute? How is the health care managment system in the Bahamas different than in the U.S.? How is diabetes managed in the Bahamas? Particularly in the Out Islands (or Family Islands)?
This is the origin of our January Term Class. Jay and I did a short scouting trip in February of 2010- more about that later. We (the entire class) will document our journey and research on this blog. Enjoy the ride!
